Dota 2 vs League of Legends?

30 Dec dota 2 vs lol

While League of Legends has been around seemingly forever at this point, I somehow just never really got into it. Oh, I signed up for an account, messed around in a game or two (all versus bots, of course), but didn’t really feel that hook that so many others have.

But when Dota 2 came onto the scene, my interest was immediately piqued. I was lucky enough to get a beta key, and have been playing it nonstop ever since. But invariably, friends, acquaintances, and Twitter followers will tell me to drop Dota 2 and start playing LoL instead. While I have very little objection to this, I keep wondering: why?

I’m not knocking LoL. I’m not gonna fangirl out and say that Dota 2 is definitively better – because hey, how would I know? But I DO have to wonder what it is about LoL that keeps it still so much more talked-about.

Isn’t Dota 2 supposed to be that shiny new game? Shouldn’t everyone being vying for coveted beta keys? Laws of supply and demand and all that; doesn’t limiting the supply – in this case beta keys – increase the demand? And since I never caught onto LoL in its early days, I thought I’d strike while the iron was hot and become an early adapter of its Valve-made counterpart.

Based on the little knowledge I have of LoL (essentially the fact that you can’t deny enemy creep kills), it seems like it could be better suited to my personal play style. But looking at the wider fanbase – which one will come out on top? Can the two peacefully coexist in the world of esports, or will Dota 2 continue to take a backseat even after its launch?

And if the latter case should occur…should I switch to LoL?

Now, I’m not asking whether I should try LoL or not – it’s a given that I’m going to at least give it a shot. But based on the apparent similarities, I have to doubt I’ll end up with a strong preference for either over the other. So in the end it comes down to what my friends are playing, what the community is like, and, though I hate to admit it, which is more popular. While I’m not advocating doing things just because they’re popular, I do know that the popularity of a game matters tremendously. For instance, the larger a game’s player base is, the more attention it gets from its developers – they have the budget to hire a staff to administer regular patches and bug fixes, interface with the community, and develop new content. Assuming I’ll like Dota 2 and LoL more or less equally, it seems only logical to stick with whichever one is more popular.

So in the end, which will come out on top?

Adventures in The Old Republic, episode 1!

27 Dec

This morning, I woke up in a wonderful mood, forgetting that the Star Wars: The Old Republic servers were down for scheduled maintenance to release patch 1.0.1.

So with all this extra free time that I can’t spend playing ToR, an idea came to me – I’ll begin a new video series, documenting my ToR adventures.

Here’s episode 1!

The tl;dw (too long; didn’t watch) is:

- We formed our guild last night – The Sith Brorder :D

- I hit level 13

- Our guild ran the first Flashpoint – Black Talon

- Tried out a Warzone, and lost horribly, but got tons of experience and credits

Let me know what you think!

MAGFest 2012 – You missed pre-registration, but there’s always next year…

18 Dec magfest

Whenever I talk about MAGFest, I come off sounding like a convention hipster. That’s partially because I first attended the event in 2009, at a time when it was like the Isla de Muerta: most people hadn’t heard of MAGFest unless they had already attended it.

It was a different time – I was at a different place in my life, had different life goals, a different circle of friends, etc. The convention itself was different as well. And even though it was the seventh time this event had happened, MAGFest still hadn’t blown up like it would in two short years’ time.

The next time I attended MAGFest was its ninth iteration, in January 2011. Everything had changed; although the venue was the same, the number of attendees had more than doubled, making the Hilton seem somehow much smaller…funny how that happens. This time the event had completely sold out, which became painfully apparent during the 20-minute waits for the elevators. Not even an exaggeration.

iOS 5 – Why you should upgrade

11 Dec

Although iTunes has been pestering me to update my iPhone’s software for months now, I had my concerns; I’d been hearing reports of the new update killing battery life, and also proving difficult when dealing with the 3G network. But, after the November 28th update, which supposedly included a fix for the battery life issue, I bit the bullet and upgraded.

After the better part of an hour, the update was complete.

CS:GO Beta Impressions and Gameplay

7 Dec

Here are my initial thoughts on the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta – including gameplay! Tons of people have been bugging me to stream the game, so I decided to put some gameplay clips into a video instead.

Warning: I’m absolutely awful at CS:GO, but at least this video will display some of the basic gameplay mechanics.

Also, since EVERYONE has asked me: yes, I have one extra CS:GO beta key to give away – details to be posted at a later date!
